Coffee Table Update

All of the pieces are now rough cut on the bandsaw and I started arranging them together before gluing up. The pieces of ash that the legs are cut from are chunky -  2" thick!

I like this upside down look already

This table is going to be really heavy. I considered coring out chunks of the table to lighten it up but after chatting with a seasoned veter at the workshop I opted not to, the weight is part of the appeal. More upside down shots of the mock-up below.

The following week I started gluing up the flat edges of the table for the pieces without legs. From the photo above I'll glue the end sections and middle section independently, then glue each set of legs so there will be 5 pieces or chunks to the table that I will then glue and combine all together. It turned out to be way more difficult than I thought. Once all glued up and clamped there is limited time to get everything lining up properly and when under pressure from the clamps the pieces of wood want to slide out of alignment. Should have done a dry clamp. definitely will when I glue up the legs.

I must have used 20-25 clamps, way more than I thought I'd need. But whenever I added another clamp I was still squeezing glue out. Glue-ups are intense, this was not relaxing at all. Almost lost it but pulled through and turned out okay.

Two of the cut-outs for the legs had strips of bark on them that I cut off and then laminated another piece of clean ash too. This is a glue-up of one below. Even this little glue-up had lost of slipping and sliding, not easy at all. the squeeze clamps were supper helpful closing the edges at the end, the only edges that will be exposed.

Next week I'll glue-up the giant leg pieces and see if I have time to glue all 5 chunks of the table together after that.

Bye till then!

Nate
